Fundraising 101

With every great plan, great leadership is needed, that means each of you!

It was my great pleasure to run for Woman of the Year and join the LLS Board of Trustees because I am confidant that the dollars we raise are truly making a difference!

Do YOU have to have the WILL, the CREATIVITY, and the DETERMINATION to be a SUPER team?

Set an ambitious fundraising goal for your team.  OK so this is where I fell short.  I set my goal too low.  Way too low.  So much so that I reached that first goal in the first 6 days of my campaign.  Be realistic, but optimistic.  Set something reasonable but something to shoot for at the same time.  And if your original goal is met then adjust accordingly, as I did.  And each member of your team should have a personal goal as well.

Second, Utilize your members! The more help you have to reach out to people, the better.  I had two campaign managers and 9 team members.  All very strategic. Some I knew a long time, some I knew of, and some I just met.  Again all very strategic.  My besties on my team, were those that would motivate me, and keep me going and provide knowledge of the campaign.  Those that I knew of wanted to be on a team to continue their own personal fundraising journey but through a team.  And those that I just met were entering the fundraising world for the first time and wanted to meet new people in the process.  I held weekly team meeting to brainstorm the best and most effective and efficient ways to do things. As a team captain my biggest lesson was to delegate.  My type “A” personality needed to be flexible.  Beyond flexible.  I had to realize that I couldn’t do it all.

Next!  Getting the word out there is the key to success. Have a plan.  We started with a slogan and kind of went from there.  I drafted a letter stating what I was doing and why.  I sent that letter via snail mail, email, posted it on FB, and asked my team members to send 10 out with a note attached to it from them. I received donations from Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Virginia. Drove to Long Island for a party, Middletown NY to shoot paintballs out of a helicopter and plunged in a very cold lake.   FB was my biggest platform. It allowed me to reach those I didn’t have addresses for and get the word out on the various events we had planned.  It also allowed for easy sharing of the information.  We hosted 10 events in 10 weeks.  All of which I attended.

You as Team captains and every one of your team members has access to a Light the Night page where money can easily be donated.  This is a not only a great way to raise money but a way to recruit walkers at the same time.  Encourage your members to beat the national average by raising over $250.  That only $10 from 25 people.

Have a kickoff event!  It could be a BBQ in your yard!  Getting people motivated and excited about what you are doing is contagious!

Last but not least, my favorite line in life that pertains to fundraising is, “IF YOU DON’T ASK, YOU DON’T GET!”  The ask is the hardest part for some people, but think of it this way, “WHAT DOES A CURE COST?” If you ask someone to donate, and they say how much do you want? ask them that question and then ask for more!  Ask for donations that you can raffle off.  We received so many tangible donations that, I was giving them away to other teams at the end.  A good problem to have.

Unfortunately, we all know someone affected by cancer, wouldn’t it be great if we were the generation to STOMP it out?

I will leave you with this!

A good friend of mine and one of this years Women of Excellence recipients said it best, be grateful for what you have, do what you can for others and have fun doing it.  Those three things keep me going every day.
